The Art and Design department encourages students to develop their drawings skills, be imaginative and creative. Students are taught how to use a range of materials and techniques to create 2D and 3D forms. Students are introduced to artists' traditional and modern, cultures and contexts in order to be inspired to create imaginative pieces of work. Students work individually and as a team throughout the year on a variety of different themes.

Keys Stage 3

All students have 2 lessons of Art and Design a week, comprises of 2 different subjects:

Art, Craft and Design

Within both of the subjects the students will develop their skills in drawing, design and creativity. Using an artist, designer and context as a basis the students will create imaginative pieces supported by a sketchpad of development work, including experimenting and refining of different art materials and techniques.

Key Stage 4

At KS4 the students will be set design briefs and will work with a range of materials to create 2D and 3D art pieces throughout the 2 years. The students will to build up creative skills through learning and doing, to develop imaginative and intuitive ways of working and develop knowledge and understanding of media, materials and technologies in historical and contemporary contexts, societies and cultures.

Students will be required to develop and show a range of skills including:

Developing ideas through investigation informed by contextual and other sources.
Demonstrating critical and cultural understanding.
Refine ideas through experimenting with resources, media, materials, techniques and processes.
Recording ideas and intentions visually.
Presenting a personal visual response.

Key Stage 5

KS5 Art and Design provides the students with the opportunity to develop personal responses to ideas, observations, experiences, environments and cultures in practical, critical and contextual forms.

Independence of mind in developing own individual ideas

An interest and enthusiasm for art and design
The experience of working with a range of media, including traditional and new media and technologies
