Students at The Blyth Academy were invited to take part in a sandwich design competition as part of British sandwich week. British Sandwich Week is a week-long celebration of the greatest 'food-to-go' and quite possibly the most iconic British culinary invention; the Sandwich.

KS3 students came up with lots of brilliant ideas of new sandwiches which could be served in our Bistro. The sandwich industry holds its annual Awards, 'The Sammies', where the Best New Sandwich and Sandwich Retailers are crowned. We held our own 'Sammies' and the three winning designs were then made up in our Academy kitchen, with the support of the kitchen staff.

The winning sandwich was also sold in the bistro for other staff and students to try. Mrs Fitzsimmons, Food Teacher at the Academy commented, "I was really pleased at the quality and quantity of entries the students created. We have some fantastic young people who are eager to get involved with all aspects of Academy life. This competition has also added to our student voice in connection with what could be served in The Blyth Academy bistro at lunchtimes."

The students were also given the great opportunity to visit the catering area and make up their sandwich designs.

Thank you to Laura from Chartwells for helping to judge the sandwich competition and the Academy staff in the kitchen for having mini apprentices for a day.
