Bronze DofE Qualifying Expedition

DUKE OF EDINBURGH BRONZE QUALIFIER EXPEDITION: Thursday 6th and Friday 7th July 2017

Before the end of term a group of nineteen Year 10 and 11 students from The Blyth Academy completed their assessed qualifier expedition which has fulfilled the expedition section of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Awards. This expedition involved two days of walking with an overnight camp. The students were divided up into expedition teams and the groups had to follow a carefully pre-planned route following sections of Hadrian's Wall. They started out at Birdoswald Roman Fort on the Thursday morning with the teams then making their own way on the 9 mile route along the Wall to Winshields Farm Campsite near Haltwhistle. The route finished on the Friday lunchtime at Housesteads Roman Fort.

All of the students managed extremely well in the conditions and successfully met the twenty conditions of the assessed DofE expedition. The next stage for each student is to ensure they have completed the other three sections of their Bronze DofE Award; Physical, Skill and Volunteering. Successful completion of each of these three sections will ensure successful completion of the Bronze DofE Award and allow each student to progress on to the Silver DofE Award. We will be hosting an Awards Evening in the Spring of 2018 to celebrate the achievement of our students on the DofE Award so it is vital that students ensure the other sections are completed for this event.

This expedition was made possible by the recent Awards for All Grant from the Big Lottery Fund.
