Silver DofE Qualifying Expedition

DUKE OF EDINBURGH SILVER QUALIFIER EXPEDITION: Monday 17th - Wednesday 19th July 2017

Before the end of term a group of fifteen Year 11 and 12 students from The Blyth Academy completed their assessed qualifier expedition which has fulfilled the expedition section of their Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Awards. This expedition involved three days of walking with two overnight camps. The students were divided up into expedition teams and the groups had to follow a carefully pre-planned route which in places followed sections of both the Pennine Way and the Teesdale Way.

Monday saw the groups travel just over ten miles, the groups started out at Hury Reservoir in the morning before making their way along a section of the Pennine Way heading north. The groups then left the Pennine Way to cross Lune Moor and Holwick Fell. The groups descended the fell at the impressive Holwick Scars before camping at Low Way Farm in Holwick.

On Tuesday the groups followed an eleven mile route taking in Low Force Waterfall and Bowlees Nature Reserve before heading east over Hardberry Hill. The groups then descended the moor, making their way to Leekworth Caravan Park on the outskirts of Middleton-in-Teesdale.

Wednesday saw the groups following a flatter route along the Teesdale Way for eight miles, taking in the River Lune and the River Tees before finishing the expedition in the village of Cotherstone. The weather held up for most of the expedition to ensure that the groups had very hot and dry days on their expedition.

All of the students managed extremely well in the conditions and successfully met the twenty conditions of the assessed DofE expedition. The next stage for each student is to ensure they have completed the other three sections of their Silver DofE Award; Physical, Skill and Volunteering. Successful completion of each of these three sections will ensure successful completion of the Silver DofE Award and allow each student to progress on to the Gold DofE Award. We will be hosting an Awards Evening in the Spring of 2018 to celebrate the achievement of our students on the DofE Award so it is vital that students ensure the other sections are completed for this event.

This expedition was made possible by the recent Awards for All Grant from the Big Lottery Fund.
